Sydney Wrinkle Injection Myths at Star Cosmetic Medicine

Sydney Wrinkle Injections medicine (B.Tox for short) has become ingrained in Sydney society and has become an integral part of grooming for many in the Harbour City.

But for something that has become so ubiquitous, I am often surprised by the number of myths and half truths that surround the treatment.

Below are some of the more common myths that I encounter working as a doctor at Star Cosmetic Medicine in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Myth 1: B.Tox will freeze all my expressions!
There are about 60 muscles below the skin of your face. They normally work in harmony, but from excessive movement wrinkles can form. If too much B.tox is used the muscles of expression may become too relaxed. Most doctors would use relatively small doses to make you look ‘refreshed’ but still keep your expression.

By using small amounts of the wrinkle injection in just the right areas one can have a softening of the wrinkles without compromising facial expression.

Myth 2: B.Tox is a toxin!
This to some extent is true. Its medical name is Wrinkle Injections Toxin Type A. In massive doses it can relax muscles that you do not want relaxed and can make one very sick.

But to keep things in perspective – an old pharmacy expression is that ‘everything is a poison – it all depends on the dose’. All medicines can make you very unwell in large enough doses. Even water can kill you if enough is taken.

Myth 3: Wrinkle injections hurt
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor uses very small needles. So small that they are smaller than a human hair. Many people state that the treatments are not worse than mosquito bites. Certainly not in the same ball park as compared to having a blood test.

Myth 4: B.Tox will numb my face!
This is totally false. Wrinkle Injections medicine works on what is called the neuromuscular junction. It only works on the muscle nerves – not the nerves of sensation. B.tox never affects sensation, only the ability to relax muscles.

Myth 5. Once you start B.Tox you need to continue otherwise the wrinkles become worse!
This is also false.

One treatment lasts about three months. Subsequent treatments tend to last longer. Eventually as muscle strength returns – the lines will eventually reform. But they will certainly be no worse than previously.

In fact, even if you never had B.tox again – those lines will likely be a little better than if you had never been treated. Mainly because you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
